Our experience from many complex projects is that new initiatives are often triggered by different events and that the full problem definition is not understood at the time the tender was developed. It is therefore important that enough time and resources are allocated to ensure the necessary understanding related to the project so that the prioritized needs for change are addressed and that these desired results are the basis for designing the projects deliverables. The initial phase should therefore focus on understanding and developing the desired results by identifying a common project vision and business case. The business case should than be a living document that is updated as the project develops giving a more realistic understanding of the results that can be enabled through the project.

Desired results should be broken down and ownership of these should be taken by the internal resources that have the daily responsibility for the area being changed. The way the organizations internal resources are integrated into the project is therefore critical for success. Most projects that are seen as consultant led will fail because of lack of ownership and mobilisation so the answer lies in how the consultants can work through the organization during all phases of the project so that desired results are actually enabled.
In many technology enabled projects we see a possible conflict of interest between the client and the chosen consulting firm because of close relations with potential suppliers of IT hardware, software and or services. Fornebu Consulting has no ties with such suppliers therefore we can be a neutral sparring partner in complex decisions to the best interest of our clients.
